Retainers

During the retainer visit, our team will conduct a consultation to discuss the orthodontic history of a patient, their bite, and the stability of their teeth after braces or clear aligner treatment. We will also assess the retainer that the patient is currently wearing, if any.

Depending on the individual case, we will suggest the patient get a clear removable retainer, a Hawley retainer, or a fixed bonded retainer. A clear removable retainer is usually worn at night. A Hawley retainer has a thin wire attached across the front teeth with an acrylic base. A fixed retainer is a thin wire attached behind the front teeth.

To create a removable retainer, we will take either a digital scan or an impression. Then, once a retainer is created, we will check the fit of the appliance and teach the patient how to insert, remove, clean, and store the device. In the case of a fixed retainer, we will bond the wire and polish it to make it smooth.

A retainer provides protection to the effort and money that were spent on the orthodontic procedure. It holds the teeth in their corrected position until the gums and the bones stabilise themselves after the procedure. Regular retainer wear and monitoring ensure that the chances of teeth moving again will be minimised.

Furthermore, a retainer ensures peace of mind. Regardless of whether it is a clear removable retainer or a fixed retainer, they both help maintain the patient’s smile simply and comfortably. Retainers are personalised, discreet, and tailored to provide the best results possible. If the retainer feels too tight, sharp, loose, or uncomfortable, we will check it and adjust the treatment if needed.

How long should we wear retainers?

Depends on the individual bite and the history of orthodontic treatment. Often, the first period involves wearing the retainer all the time and then switching to night-time wearing.

Will teeth move without a retainer?

Yes, teeth can move. Naturally, the teeth have the tendency to shift after the treatment with braces or clear aligners. Regular retainer wear helps maintain the corrected smile.

What kind of retainer is better?

The type of retainer needed depends on the condition of the teeth, the bite, the patient’s routine, and personal preferences. We will check the patient’s smile before recommending the appropriate clear, Hawley, or fixed retainer.

What should I do if the retainer feels tight?

Tightness of a retainer may indicate that the teeth moved or the retainer should be adjusted. We advise booking a fit check instead of forcing it.
